Chapter 23
As this unlikely bird flew, the propeller began to whine in a high pitch as it searched for a more familiar viscous medium. Trissy placed the engine in neutral as Rex turned toward Zeila. The feisty, elderly woman smiled with satisfaction as she observed the shock on his face and the bewilderment in his eyes. For the first time in hours, Rex fell silent as he braced himself for what lay ahead.
âYes sir, this shoâ do remind me of the good old days!â Zeila shouted into the wind as the Glastron flew past a forest of denuded trees standing vertical in the stagnant waters of the swamp. Suddenly, the bow started to rise, gradually at first, but then more and more rapidly. Rex was convinced that the boat was about to flip when the stern touched down, gently. However, a tranquil landing was not to be. Almost instantaneously, the bow came crashing down with a violent force. There was a big splash and several sudden powerful jolts to the left and then the right as the boat struck and glanced off tree after tree.
âWOW, letâs do it again!â an exhilarated Zeila insisted as the boat began to slow. âRex, you can release your death grip. The eagle has landed,â she proclaimed with zeal.
âZeila, you havenât been sipping any of this swamp water, have you? There are reports of people going mad,â a nervous, gravity-oriented Rex asked as his racing heart began to slow.
Rex looked over his shoulder. Much to his relief, the port engine had stopped smoking and the terrorists had not decided to take the leap of faith. All was quiet and the air was still. Darkness had fallen.
âRex, leave Zeila alone,â Trissy requested, finding the switch to the side-mounted searchlight.
âIf you donât ask, you donât learn,â Rex replied in his own defense.
âZeila, where are we?â Trissy inquired while placing the engine into gear before easing the throttle forward. Slowly and carefully she steered around natures many obstacles.
âIn paradise, my child, in paradise. This was my old stompinâ grounds, when Grandma Moses was around,â Zeila shared enthusiastically while reflecting on a happier time in her life.
âRather soggy stompinâ grounds, wouldnât you say, Zeila?â Rex said with an air of suspicion as he observed the elderly woman.
âMemories from a well-spent youth,â Zeila replied vigorously while making her way toward Trissy.
âGrandma Moses. Huh, Iâll bet. She didnât by chance part the waters, did she?â Rex asked sarcastically as he suddenly became aware of a thick, hazy mist engulfing the boat.
âNo, but she did filter them for the boys making moonshine, that is. In fact, after one sip of Grandmaâs moonshine, you damn sure wouldnât need to part the waters. You could walk on âem!â Zeila answered without breaking stride, the pride more than evident in her voice.
âZeila, all of a sudden the terrain has changed drastically and the air is unusually warm,â Trissy said with surprise as her searchlight illuminated a forest of massive cypress trees, each of which had
